The Bull Inn and Royal Hotel or Bull & Royal, as it is more widely known dates back to the mid-1860s and was originally at 17, Pitt Street on the corner of Ashton Street, Longridge. The road was to change names in the early 1900s to Preston Road and was later renamed Derby Road, as it is today.

Edward Bamber had run the business for nearly 20 years at the time of his death in 1886. I suspect his wife Esther continued behind the bar for a few years afterwards before the business was eventually put up to let in 1889.

A 40-YEAR-OLD pub regular assaulted the landlady when she spoke to him about taking a glass outside. Blackburn magistrates heard when a female member of staff came out to investigate she was also assaulted. Christopher John McManamon, of Chapel Hill, Longridge, was convicted after a trial of assaulting Louise Poulter and Claire Furness.

He was ordered to pay £150 compensation to Ms Poulter and £250 to Ms Furness, £100 costs and £15 victim surcharge. He was also made subject to a restraining order for 12 months with conditions that he does not enter the Bull and Royal or have any contact with the aggrieved. Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Ms Coulter was the licensee. McManamon took a glass outside and she followed and said she couldn’t believe he had done that. “Without warning he punched her in the face, knocking her to the floor,” said Miss Allan. “She described herself as utterly shocked.” Ms Furness came out to see what was happening and found the landlady on the floor. McManamon took hold of her and pushed her back into the pub.

She tried to close the door behind her and McManamon barged it open and trapped her arm against the wall with the door before other customers came to her aid. Sentence was passed in the defendant’s absence after the court heard he was in hospital following a serious accident.
