Name: The White Bull

The White Bull was originally a working farm as well as being an Inn and is located on Preston Road in Alston, between Grimsargh and Longridge. The building dates back to the late 1700s/early 1800s.

Both Edmund Sagar and Mary Emblay were originally from Yorkshire and moved across the border after getting married in Great Mitton, York in 1816:-

By 1841 the Sagars had moved to nearby Alston Hall to concentrate on farming and the Wilkinsons were running the White Bull.

The next landlord, John Rhodes was born and brought up in the Whitechapel area of Goosnargh, his father Charles Rhodes being a farmer and the landlord of the Cross Keys Inn, so his arrival at the White Bull was not entirely unexpected.

Martha Rhodes passed away in 1891 shortly after the census above was completed leaving her eldest daughter Mary Ann to run the business.

Mary Ann Rhodes, landlady of the White Bull Inn, Alston, was summoned for having her house own during prohibited hours, and John William Magee, John Aitken, and John Bee...

Within a couple of years of her mother's passing Mary Ann married Frederick William Wilkinson from Longridge. Whilst he was the son of a builder he already had some experience in the licensed trade, living with his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Gornal who ran the Derby Arms, Chipping for a number of years.
