The Black Horse Inn dates back to the early 1800s and was located on the main Liverpool to Preston "Turnpike" road, now Old Liverpool Road. Whilst no longer a pub, the building still remains, as does that of its close neighbour, the Rose & Crown.

By the 1861 census it is clear that the Harrisons were running both the Black Horse and family farm in Much Hoole, John and Elizabeth living in separate properties. They also had a lodger in the stables at the Inn, William Wignall who was a shoemaker.
