Old postcard of Goosnargh village showing St Mary the Virgin and the Grapes Inn |
The Grapes Inn dates back to the mid-1700s but was originally known as the General Elliott until it changed its name sometime around the 1830s. The landlord during this period was a John Barton who is recorded on the 1824 directory below at the General Elliott and again in 1841 as landlord of the Grapes.
BENEFIT SOCIETIES
There is a Benefit or Friendly Society held in this township which was established on the 18th August, in the year 1784, and holds its meetings at the Grapes Inn (formerly the General Elliot). The annual meeting is always held on Whit Tuesday, on which day there is service in the Church, and the club members parade the village, headed by a band of music, and the society's banner which displays two female figures emblematical of Justice and Mercy hand in hand, with the motto inscribed: "Goosnargh Amicable Society." Love as Brethren.

1841 Census - John Barton |
As with most rural Inns during this period the Grapes was an important meeting place within the parish and used not only as a place to eat and drink but as an auction house, society meeting house, for Coroner's inquests and other social events.

In 1848 landlord John Barton died at the age of 82 years and was buried at St Mary the Virgin leaving his daughter Alice to run the Inn. Her mother Betty had passed away earlier in 1845.
Alice Barton remained in Goosnargh until her death in 1859 and whilst she was still probably the owner of the Grapes until that time the Inn appears to have been let out to a number of different tenants in the 1850s including a John Standen and Mark Fort.

COUNTY—TODAY
Before Mr. J. Toulmin (in the chair) and Alderman Hamilton. Mary Hughes, of the Grapes Inn, Goosnargh applied for an extension of hours from 2.30 to 6 p.m, on the 20th July the occasion being the annual bowling handicap of the Preston and District Licensed Victuallers’ Association.—Supt. Canton objected, and said he did not think the extension necessary. There would be great difficulty in defining who were entitled to be served, and if the application was granted there would an inundation of similar ones from licensees who happened to have a bowling green attached to their houses—Refused

Mrs Heaney was born Elizabeth Standen in Goosnargh in 1855, the daughter of John and Jane Standen. It appears her father John was only temporarily the landlord of the Grapes Inn and by the time of Elizabeth's baptism in St Mary the Virgin church in July that year they had moved, John continuing his work locally as a tailor.

I note their residence in 1938 was named "Standen House", one would assume after Elizabeth's parents.
