Address: 312, Eaves Lane, Chorley
The Volunteer Arms only appeared on the 1871 and 1881 Censuses with William Ratcliffe listed in 1871 and James Simm shown as the landlord in 1881 and in the directory of 1882. All trace of it after that time seems to have disappeared. This was almost certainly one of many beer houses in Chorley and was probably run on a part-time basis by James Simm whose occupation is shown as a "finisher in the bleach works" on the census.

1881 Census |
By the time of the 1891 Census James was living on Foster Street with his wife Jane and still shown as working at the Bleach Works.
Further research reveals the Volunteer Inn was to reopen in the 1880s as the Bretherton Arms.
