Angel

The 1793 Directory refers to a pub called the Angel in Chorley run by a gentleman called James Hooks.

There are no further reference made to the pub in later directories or census records.

  1. I was looking today (21st Feb 23) at a Lancashire Directory from two centuries ago in 1823 and there was a reference to a pub called the Guardian Angel, so perhaps, one and the same pub. It said it was in Market Street - which is no real surprise as there was little else to Chorley back then than the road through town. The "landlord" was named as J. Alker. The Guardian Angel wasn't in the directory the following year.

    1. Sounds likes it probably was the same place. I notice from the 1822 directory (Pigot's) that the Joiner's Arms wasn't listed, which is strange, as it was open in 1793, so maybe there was a name change or maybe this was just a brief enterprise at a different location. Food for thought, thanks.
