New landlord Francis Ainsworth arrived with his family at the Royal Oak in the late 1850s. Originating from Darwen he had worked as a "Paper Maker" in the nearby Withnell Fold Mill during which time he and Ann lived at the Brown Cow Inn, a pub regularly used by the workers there but on closer inspection they were not just lodgers, as Ann nee Whitehead was the landlord's daughter.
