Hoghton - Boar's Head Inn

Name: The Boar's Head Inn

Address: Blackburn Old Road, Hoghton

The Boar's Head is one of two pubs in the village of Hoghton, the other being the Sirloin (originally the Railway Tavern/Hotel). Dating back to the 16th century it is reputedly one of the final overnight stops of the Pendle Witches before their eventual trials and sentencing at Lancaster in 1612. It is located a short distance from the entrance to Hoghton Tower, the ancestral home of the De Hoghton family on the top of whose coat of arms appropriately stands a boar.

Listed landlords at the Boar's Head were Peter Shaw (1812), Elizabeth Ainsworth (1824-45), William Pearson (1846-47), David & Lettice Crossley (1851), Lettice Crossley (1853-64), Mary Ainswoth (1864-77), James Shorrock (1877-97), John James Robinson (1897-19), Thomas Abbott (1924), Thomas & Susan Higginson (-1930), Thomas Harrison (1930-) and Joanne Bannon (-2020).
