Goosnargh (Whittingham) - Bushell's Arms

Name: The Bushell's Arms

Address: Church Lane, Whittingham, Goosnargh

The Bushell's Arms dates back to the late 1700s and is one of a number of listed buildings in the centre of the village; the Grapes Inn, St Mary's parish church and Dr Bushell's hospital being others of note. The following excerpt from a fabulous book by local historian Janet Rigby provides some excellent historical background to the Inn, which appears to have originally been called the Ship Inn until it was bought by Robert Townley Parker Esq in 1815 who later changed the name to the Bushell's Arms in recognition of the the work of Dr. William Bushell (descendent of a prosperous woollen draper), the vicar of Heysham who bequeathed his estate to the founding of the hospital in 1735.

1824 Baines Directory
The above directory of the Kirkham parish from 1824 shows two pubs in Whittingham;  the 'Packet Boat' occupied by an Ellen Wilcock and the 'Black Horse' occupied by a Thomas Bailey. The fact that Richard Bailey, who was landlord of the Bushell's Arms in 1841 was the son of Thomas Bailey may suggest the Bushell's Arms was originally the Black Horse rather than the Ship but I can find no documented evidence to confirm it either way at this time.

The below record confirms that landlord Richard was the son of Thomas Bailey and they lived in the Goosnargh area, the "W" almost certainly indicating Whittingham and the further baptismal record below for a sibling of Richard's also records Thomas Bailey's occupation as a "shoe maker", a trade seemingly synonymous with the tenants of this Inn.

SD 53 NE GOOSNARGH GOOSNARGH LANE
Large house, dated 1722 on downspouts, converted to use as hospital c.1745, enlarged c.1822 and 1841, altered in late C19. Ashlar, hipped slate roof with ridge chimneys. Nine bays, plus 2-bay receding wings at both ends, with additions to the rear of these. Three storeys, in subdued Baroque style, now symmetrical; string courses on 2 levels, rusticated quoins, panelled parapets to the centre and the wings; the main range of 9 bays (probably the original house) has a 5-bay centre breaking forwards, the parapet bearing twin pediments containing cartouches (these pediments added after 1871, replacing 6 urn finials), a large central doorway with moulded surround flanked by engaged Ionic columns with entablatures supporting an open segmental pediment containing a cartouche with coat of arms; and sashed windows with moulded architraves; between the outer pairs of windows are decorated rainwater heads and downspouts secured by brackets, the topmost of which are lettered "1722"; the flanking bays and the wings have matching windows except for added bay windows at ground floor between the centre and the wings (the right wing was added after 1871). The left return wall of 3 bays has a centre bay breaking forwards slightly, a doorway in this with eared architrave and pedimented Ionic surround, the window above this also with an eared architrave and a moulded sill and cornice; otherwise the details match those at the front. Right return wall is similar, but has a glazed porch. C19 extensions continue to the rear of both wings. Interior is of less interest. History: Dr. William Bushell (probably a descendant of Seth Bushell of Preston, a prosperous woollen draper), vicar of Heysham, died 1735, provided by his will that if his daughter (Elizabeth, 1727-45) died before the age of 21 without issue, the whole of his estate should be devoted to the founding of a hospital at Goosnargh, at or near the dwelling house of his late father, for "maintaining, supporting or providing for decayed gentlemen or gentlewomen, or persons of the better rank...of the towns or townships of Preston, Euxton, Goosnargh, Whittingham, Fulwood and Elston, being Protestants...".

Following Richard Bailey's death in 1847 and his wife Ellen's just two years later the Inn was taken over by fellow shoemaker and farmer, William Clarkson who was from Whittingham and was to run the place for the next decade or so before leaving to continue his work as a shoe maker ("cordwainer" French name for the trade), remaining in the village living at Pear Tree Cottage (see below 1871 census).
