The Squirrel Inn lay just within the Anderton parish boundary on the outskirts of Horwich. It was a going concern as early as 1824, shown on the Standish Directory of that year below when it was being run by a Chpr Lockey.

The original pub was demolished and rebuilt around 1960 and
one shown below rebuilt on the same site.
This then closed in 2003 and became an Indian Restaurant although by
2011 it had again closed and the building has now been demolished and four
large houses built on the plot.

Joseph Austin Motler and his wife Mavis were licencees at The Squirrel until 1957 when they were both killed in the Aquila Airways crash along with their 8 year old daughter Ann.
