Back in 1851 landlord William Horsefield was assisted behind the bar by Mary Greenwood a servant and bar maid, so following his death in 1856 it came as little surprise that she would take over the inn, her brother George moving in to assist her in running the business. She hailed from the village of Wheelton and William from Tockholes, which is nearby and where he was buried after his death.
