Chipping - Dog and Partridge

Name: The Dog and Partridge

Address: Hesketh Lane, Chipping

Courtesy of WhatPub
The Dog & Partridge was a large country pub situated between Thornley and Chipping and dates back to the 16th Century. It is no longer open but the building is still standing and awaits redevelopment with planning permission granted for conversion to residential/holiday-let use.

The earliest occupants I can find are the Kay family who worked both the Inn and farm of 12 acres. John Kay was the landlord in 1824 at the age of 23 years through to his death in 1867, some 43 years later.

Thomas died in 1879 at the tender age of 41 years leaving behind Ann and their four young children, but Ann was clearly a woman of some substance and determination; undeterred she continued to run the Inn and farm for nearly 20 years. By 1881 her sister Dorothy Walmsley had moved in to assist in the business.

1895 Directory Ann Kay
In the late 1890s Ann Kay finally left the Dog & Partridge and moved her family to Lower House Farm in Ramsbottom, which was both a public house and a farm. She went on to run the Eagle and Child briefly before her death at the age of 53 years and she is buried at St Bartholomew's.

Notably, her son James Kay opened a butchery business in Edenfield as a teenager and went on to become one of the foremost cattle and sheep dealers in the North of England. His probate record is shown below, and it's fair to say that James had done rather well for himself, his effects being equivalent to over £27 million pounds today!

By 1901 the new landlord, James Newbould was behind the bar. James was no stranger to the licensed trade having previously run the Queens Arms in Inglewhite, but his time at the Inn was limited, as the license was transferred in 1905 and by 1911 he had moved to Dilworth and was working as a farmer.

1954 Probate James Brindle
By 1960 the Inn had been taken over by the Barr family who then ran it for the next 58 years before its closure in 2018. Peter and Susan Barr were the final landlords.

One final chapter for the pub was the planning and opening of its own brewery on site, the Partridge Brewery. Sadly this was a short-lived affair due to the pub's closure but it opened late Summer 2017 and closed in March 2018 and believe was the brainchild of the landlord's son, Andrew Barr.

After 58 years of the Barr family being here at the Dog and Partridge, it is with great sadness that we are closing on the 31st March 2018. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal customers who we will miss dearly and our staff who have provided outstanding service and loyalty over the years. I would just like to remind anybody with a voucher that these will need to be redeemed before this date. We are both looking forward to spending more time with family and friends. Your support has been greatly appreciated, thanks once again. Susan, Peter and everyone at the Dog and Partridge  (Facebook)
