Chipping - Talbot Inn (Hotel)

Name: The Talbot Arms

Address: Talbot Street (previously Bridge Street), Chipping

c.1890s Landlord Mann Robinson, family and customers
The Talbot Inn (or Talbot Hotel) is said to date back to 1779 and pre-dates its neighbour, the Tillotson Arms by around sixty years. Early records from the mid-1800s show the Inn was originally owned by the Robinson family who were farmers and resided at Parsonage Farm in Chipping; periodically members of the extended family also ran the Inn following the death of serving landlords, such as Isabella Robinson and Mann Robinson.

1891 Census - Mann Robinson
Death records show that Mann Robinson died in 1894 and was buried at Barnoldswick, where he was living at that time. In 1894 Richard Jackson is listed as the landlord, so I can only conclude Mann left the Talbot in the early 1890s heading for Barnoldswick. From reviewing the 1901 census records his widow Elizabeth and family were running the Seven Stars Hotel on Church Street, Barnoldswick by that time.

Seven Stars Hotel, Barnoldswick
His son, Preston Robinson continued in the trade and by 1910 was running his own pub, the Fox & Goose in Bradford before he eventually returned to run the Seven Stars in the 1930s.

In 2022 the Talbot is derelict and boarded up having been closed since 2004, its future still in the balance. It is a Grade II listed building so will hopefully avoid demolition to make way for new development, but only time will tell.
