Walton-le-Dale (Higher Walton) - Winstanley House Beerhouse

Name: Winstanley House Beerhouse

Address: Higher Walton Road, Walton-le-Dale

1844 OS Map

Winstanley House was one of many farms along Higher Walton Road and is located on the south side just before the road goes down into Cann Bridge. I suspect that Richard Southworth, the son of a cow keeper from Longton was the one and only landlord here, and chose to run a beerhouse rather than work the farm. Living on Tithebarn Street in Preston ten years earlier he was just a few yards down from the Tithebarn Inn on the corner of Lord Street and may have got a taste for the business during this time.

The property was up for let in 1852, so I can only surmise that Richard took on the property and opened the beerhouse shortly after that time, continuing to do so until the early 1860s.

1861 Census - Richard Southworth
Two years after the census Winstanley House was again advertised to let, suggesting the Southworth family had already moved on and the beer house was no more.

Twenty years later, records from St Leonard's Church in Walton-le-Dale record a William and Ann Proctor living at Winstanley House bringing up a family and working the farm.

By 1881 Richard and his wife Dorothy were back living in Longton working a farm, living next door to the Farmer's Arms on Wham Lane.
