  1. Many of these pubs are no longer with us in 2021, The Royal Oak a prime example.

    1. The Barnardo's shop on the corner of New Market Street near the Crown was built on the site of the Victoria Arms. Is that the one?

  7. My G G Grandmother, Ann Jolly, (1808-61) died at the Jolly Crofters inn and the census shows her as a widow and an inn keeper. Her husband, John Jolly (1805-57) has a gravestone with her and their daughter Margaret who died in 1862 aged 17. My problem is that the gravestone describes him as an inn keeper, yet the 1841 and 1851 censuses describe him as a starch maker and then as a bleacher manager. Are there any records that could show he became an inn keeper between 1851 and 1857? Has anyone any information about the Jolly Crofters? TIA

    1. All I have is on the relevant page>> https://chorleyinnsandtaverns.blogspot.com/p/crofters-arms.html
I can only assume that Ann and John moved to the Jolly Crofters around 1855/6 to run the pub and following John's death ,Ann was left to run the pub on her own, as per the census.
