Goosnargh (Whittingham) - Stocks House Inn (Stag's Head)

Name: The Stocks House Inn

Address: Whittingham Lane, Whittingham, Goosnargh

Stag's Head 1960s
This Whittingham pub was originally known as the Stocks House Inn and only later changed its name in the early 1870s to the Stag's Head. The original name made reference to its close proximity to the village stocks and in the early days, like many rural Inns this was also a working farm and continued as such until the early 1900s.

1892 Map
Listed landlords at the Inn were Thomas Cottam (1841-44), William Heaps (-1849), Robert Parkinson (1851-), Levi Yates (1859-), Edward Myerscough (1871), John Harrison (1881), George Harrison (1883), Alice Harrison (1884), Robert Cookson (1884-1901), Thomas Henry Fisher (1907), Frederick Roberts (1908), Thomas Brierley (1910-11), Thomas Fare (1916-20), Frederick William Wilkinson (1920), John William Pilkington (1920-), Edward Counsell (1928-29) and Martin Sanderson (2020-).

1881 Census - John Harrison (Stag's Head)
At the time of the 1881 census John Harrison's son George was living at home along with a servant Alice Cook, who originated from Penwortham. In 1883 local marriage records confirm that Alice and George married in Blackburn and took over from father John running the Stag's Head but later the same year George tragically died. Running the Inn single-handedly would have proved difficult after losing her husband and it comes as no surprise to note that the following year she remarried a local farmer, Robert Cookson with whom she ran the Inn whilst bringing up a young family for the next 20 years or so.
