The Yew Tree Inn opened in the last 1840s just down Victoria Road from the Flats Cotton Mill, which undoubtedly would have provided a large amount of custom for the pub. The photo above gives a very different picture from today, where all buildings apart from the Yew Tree have been demolished in the latter part of the 20th century to make way for new road and retail development of the Capitol Centre.

Listed landlords at the Yew Tree were Margaret Snape (-1854), Robert Gregson (1855-68), John Robinson (1868), John R Dougal (1869-), Alice Brierley (1881), Edward Wilson (1891), Edward Rutter (1895-), John Toole (1911), George Barton (1917-) and William Lakeland (1924-).

After a spell at the Yew Tree, Margaret Snape moved to the White Bull Inn where her daughter Sarah Snape was the landlady and together they ran that inn for a number of years.
