The Farmer's Arms, as the name suggests was originally a working farm, the home of the Brown family and remained as such until the 1880s. Located on Wham Lane it was the only pub in Whitestake on the outskirts of Longton.

Listed landlords at the pub were John Brown (-1859), John Brown Jnr (1861-63), Elizabeth Brown (1863-71), Edward Brown (1881), William Ward (1891-1905) and Richard Bretherton (1911-24).

By 1856 John Brown was in his early 70s and clearly looking to sell the business and enjoy retirement but the subsequent record of his death in 1859 and his son John running the pub in 1861 confirm no sale had gone through in the intervening years.
