Address: Jolly Mill Lane aka Chorley Road, Standish
1845 Map |
Jolly Mill was the name of the wood and saw mill situated to the east of Chorley Road leading out of Standish towards Worthington, on the other side of the weir from Fairclough Wood and it would no doubt have been the workers from the saw mill and Worthington Paper Mill further up the road that patronised the beer house for the duration of its short existence in the middle of the 1800's.
This was the home of James Watmough and his family from the 1830's through to the late 1860's following which there is no further reference to its existence. James was born on 6th June 1808 in nearby Haigh and he and his wife Jane lived with their children on Chorley Road until James' death in 1867 (records show that Jane died before James, in January of the same year).
On the census enumerator's route the beer house, which was also a small farm of some 5 acres was situated south of the junction of Rectory Lane (aka Parsonage Lane) and Chorley Road, which was known as Jolly Mill Lane in the 1840's and by the process of elimination is the small farm shown below Horrocksford Bridge on the 1845 map above.
Later maps show that this became known as Douglas House, which is still standing today, although it has long since been a residential property.
