Walton-le-Dale (Higher Walton) - Castle Hotel

Name: The Castle Hotel

Address: 48, Gregson Lane, Higher Walton

Castle Hotel 2004 pre-demolition
The Castle Hotel was built in the early 1850s on Gregson Lane, on the west side of the tenement farmhouses, later known as Hatherlow Farm (see photo below), which these days are private residences. The 1844 OS map clipping below shows the farm buildings before the inn was built, situated below the 'r' of Gregson Lane. First reference to the inn is found on the 1861 census below, although I suspect it was opened in the mid-1850s.
