The Castle Hotel was built in the early 1850s on Gregson Lane, on the west side of the tenement farmhouses, later known as Hatherlow Farm (see photo below), which these days are private residences. The 1844 OS map clipping below shows the farm buildings before the inn was built, situated below the 'r' of Gregson Lane. First reference to the inn is found on the 1861 census below, although I suspect it was opened in the mid-1850s.

Listed landlords were Thomas Wade (1861), Samuel Moon (1869-), James Gregson (1880), George Holland (1881), John Pearson (1885), Joseph Allinson (1891), Alice Rigby (1895), William Tattersall (1901), William Slater (1911), Arthur Whiteside (1921-39) and Robert Smith (1934).
