The White Bull was originally a working farm as well as being an Inn and is located on Preston Road in Alston, between Grimsargh and Longridge. The building dates back to the late 1700s/early 1800s.

The next landlord, John Rhodes was born and brought up in the Whitechapel area of Goosnargh, his father Charles Rhodes being a farmer and the landlord of the Cross Keys Inn, so his arrival at the White Bull was not entirely unexpected.

PRESTON POLICE INTELLIGENCE
OFFENCE AGAINST THE LICENSING ACT
John Rhodes, a landlord of the White Bull, Alston, was summoned for a breach of the Licensing Act, and S Rawsthorne and John Jones were summoned for aiding and abetting.

Within a couple of years of her mother's passing Mary Ann married Frederick William Wilkinson from Longridge. Whilst he was the son of a builder he already had some experience in the licensed trade, living with his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Gornal who ran the Derby Arms, Chipping for a number of years.
